...in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 we did some things that were wrong. We did a whole lot of things that were right, but we tortured some folks. We did some things that were contrary to our values. I understand why it happened. I think its important when we look back to recall how afraid people were after the Twin Towers fell and the Pentagon had been hit and the plane in Pennsylvania had fallen, and people did not know whether more attacks were imminent, and there was enormous pressure on our law enforcement and our national security teams to try to deal with this. And its important for us not to feel too sanctimonious in retrospect about the tough job that those folks had. And a lot of those folks were working hard under enormous pressure and are real patriots. But having said all t...
Most of it I think is very funny. There is a rap song, and there is one using the words from the Hobby Lobby dissent. I havent seen anything that isnt either pleasing or funny on the Web site, the justice said, adding that she likes the Notorious R.B.G. meme. I think she has created a wonderful thingI will admit I had to be told by my law clerks, whats this Notorious, and they explained that to me, but the Web site is something I enjoy, all of my family do.
Ebola wont kill us all, but something else might. Like everything livingon Earth, viruses must evolve to survive. That is whyavian influenzahas provoked so much anxiety; it has not yet mutated into an infection that can spread easily. Maybe it never will, but it could happen tomorrow. A pandemic is like an earthquake that we expect but cannot quite predict. As Quammen puts it, every emerging virus is like a sweepstakes ticket, bought by the pathogen, for the prize of a new and more grandiose existence. Its a long-shot chance to transcend the dead end. To go where it hasnt gone and be what it hasnt been. Sometimes the bettor wins big.
You can't afford to be cynical.Cynicism is fashionable sometimes. You see it all over our culture, all over TV; everybody likes just putting stuff down and being cynical and being negative, and that shows somehow that you're sophisticated and you're cool. You know what -- cynicism didnt put a man on the moon.Cynicism didnt win women the right to vote.Cynicism did not get a Civil Rights Act signed. Cynicism has never won a war.Cynicism has never cured a disease.Cynicism has never started a business.Cynicism has never fed a young mind. I do not believe in a cynical America; I believe in an optimistic America that is making progress. And I believe despite unyielding opposition, there are workers right now who have jobs who didnt have them before because of what we've done; and folks who got he...
About once perKeeping Up With the Kardashiansepisode, you will hear one of the Ks use the word work to describe activities (having their photograph taken, drinking iced coffee while walking around a potential retail space, looking at pictures of bathing suits and saying super cute) that no one who actually works at a job, even an easy job, would refer to as such. I love the Kardashians and I believe theyve sustained themselves as famous people through resourcefulness and even personal sacrifice, but them saying the word work is always, always funny to me. They need to come up with another word to describe what they do, like gork. A hypothetical Khloe quote from a world where this is the case: Ive just really been trying to focus on gork.
